Published!

For a few days last week, I was in fact a published editor. Not author, I hasten to add. I had published a ‘book’ to Amazon Kindle.

The Amazon Kindle platform (buy a kindle here, or download the app for mac/pc/iPhone (for free!)…) brings a whole new opportunity for the publishing of content. It’s incredibly easy to use, I managed to publish two sermons by Hugh Latimer as a book to the store with only an hour of work (it took my twice as long to read them). The only problem at the moment is that one cannot ‘sell’ books for free on the Kindle Store, and with what I had published being a public domain work (and only available courtesy of Project Canterbury), it would be lacking integrity to sell it.

Hopefully, I can use this as a proof of concept in a way, to support the publication on Kindle of good christian books that are currently out of print.

And oh, if you have a kindle, or you downloaded the app, here’s Before the Convocation of Clergy by Hugh Latimer

I got a Kindle about 10 days ago – it’s amazing! I reckon it’s a fantastic way to share books for dirt cheap, compared to printing. If Luther were writing today, he’d be all over the Kindle store!

Now, if only Amazon would allow properly free books, we could all have fantastic, rich libraries brimming with brilliant books which are long out of print. It’s the future – you, sir, are a pioneer!

    Hi Nathan,

Interesting post. I’m an indie author and write primarily for the Kindle; it’s a brilliant tool, and so easy to publish content to the store. I’m also the Editor-in-Chief of Crossring, which, as you know, seeks to provide good quality Christian literature to people around the world.

If you’re interested in formatting out-of-copyright Christian books for Kindle, I’d be very interested in working with you to make ebook versions available through the Crossring website. It would seem to fit in very well with our remit, and we’re hoping to launch our own publishing arm soon to make our online content available offline.

Mention this to Ali and see what he has to say about it!
